Watermark all images for users not logged in. Thoughts?

I am putting this up for discussion as it is something I am considering.

Watermarks on all thumbnails and on all images publicly accessible except for sample dueling and perhaps the javascript image detail page which should require a log in after so many views. A user must log in to see a non-watermarked image.

Pertsonaly i can not see any benefit when tthumbnails have a watermark, its a deflection from the image thats already minimized !!

  • Scott, are you talking about putting the copyright in the corner of the image or the Pixoto across the center of the thumbnail? I agree with Renos, if you are talking about putting it across the center. I think it would make it too hard to see the small image.

If your goal is just to get non-members to log in to see the images, then it might work for that purpose. I just wouldn't want the little pictures obscured all the time.

  • The rational behind this is to limit access to non-users and prevent non-watermarked images popping up around the web.

Once you sign up or log in, you see everything without the watermark.
If you are a user, you agree to the terms of service and you are no longer viewing a publicly accessible image.  If you are a non-user, you are only limited to the copyright rules of where you are at.

I believe I read in another thread a user stating that if an image is publicly available in a certain US state, you are authorized to use it.  I am not sure if that user was correct or not.  Any one recall reading that and have a link to that original post so I can follow up on it?

Don't get me wrong, I would much rather have every image non-watermarked because like you said, it is a better user experience, but I care more about my photographers and protecting their hard work.

  • We do have codes telling google to not index thumbnails, but they are not respected because the images are not served from a pixoto.com domain.

We have had to put in an additional check that determines if it is google and if it is, serve a watermark on the main image detail pages, I would rather extend this to everywhere, including non-users.

  • This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Google IMages still showing photos without copyright and name !!!! NOT HAPPY.

I'm new to Pixoto but I was really surprised to see several of my photos that I uploaded ONLY to pixoto appear on google search WITHOUT my copyright name info. HOW and WHY> I already contacted Google.l How many people used these photos without cost and how would I even be able to now. Very irresponsible imho. I saw other concerns about this in your help over a year ago. I have since learned to apply the watermark but that should have been the first thing reviewed on this with with NEW users.... The worse problem is that when you click on images in google - there was NO copyright symbol and no name as we see after we upload images on pixoto. I believe pixoto needs to seriously TALK to Google. NOW. including screen shot...

I found some of the images I have uploaded to Pixoto on Google Images. If you click on the image a clean copy can be made and used. I was under the impression images were secure. This situation is even more surprising given that stock sales have now been introduced? How can images be made secure? Thanks.

  • Hi Scott, I'm in great favour of your suggestion to use watermarks on all thumbnails and on all images publicly accessible. I've seen it happening aldeady that pictures of mine are used on certain websites. Since they're were not sold through Pixoto (and I didn't got any revenue from them) I assume...they're stolen (simple via Google search or something).

And completely side-topic: I think it would be a good idea, if selling pictures remains a goal of Pixoto, to make it possible for the Picutures owners benefit more in certain cases.

Scott, would it be possible for PRO members to get their images in the Website gallery protected by the Pixoto watermark and a cross? Now if you have the gallery activated the images are really exposed to theft - at least this was the case earlier this year.
