I’m confused

How on Earth can compete a tomato with a waterfall?

Nature Up Close is a very large category and I think the subcategories are missinterpreted by many people, at least ... if they not looking for a possibility to cheat!
And not just that! When you vote in People's category, you see many girls in bikini. The best is when you see a nice ass in body parts! :)) I think this should be regulated, otherwise we will see a waterdrops (macro) competition instead of flowers and so on ...
I understand that someone can make mistake, I made myself too ... but all the time?

    Just a few example:
    1. This picture has nothing to do with Nature Up Close! Eventually in Abstract or Artistic Objects:
    http://www.pixoto.com/images-photogra...
    2. Same issue - probably the response:
    http://www.pixoto.com/images-photogra...
    and this:
    http://www.pixoto.com/images-photogra...

The waterdrops stroy is very similar and now you can see for yourself that almost no image is good enough without waterdrops ...

It stands in peoples nature to copy. Thats how they learn to walk, talk ... and so on. Don't be surprised if within a few days you will see only painted flowers, because they copy everything, not just the good examples.

Pity ... because both of them have some excellent shoots in theyre gallerys.

    • and Clare... that photo of the warp-speed flower vexed me also...

  • Hello Mihaly,

I understand your complaint, but as Darrell and Joyce have said, there is no rule that says you can't paint flowers or use Photoshop. If the paint drops had been the focus of the painting, a macro shot on the paint, then it would be considered abstract. The subject is still the flower in the linked images though.

  • @ Joyce:
You're right in this case still life is a better category intead of abstract or artistic ...
I'll understand Darrell's statement and exactly that's what I'm talking about! Cases like this shloud be regulated somehow or whitin the category or in a new category, but for shore not in Natura Up Close. Let me give you another few examples:
    1. flower killed by Photoshop or something like that (#5/Day and now is on #8/Week) :
    http://www.pixoto.com/images-photogra...
    2. flower killed by "rain"-drops + Photoshop or something like that ... (5%/Day and #45/Week):
    http://www.pixoto.com/images-photogra...

What make's a picture Nature Up Close or Still life or something else? Only just the subject? Come on ...:
    1. Food and Drink:
    http://www.pixoto.com/images-photogra...
    2. Nature Up Close:
    http://www.pixoto.com/images-photogra...
...both pictures made in the same studio conditions. If you ask me: this is still life too ...

Anyway I think there is no reason on Earth to go further - sice I feel like I'm talking alone.

    @ Darrell:
Honestly I don't care if my image has lost in a duel with yours. Your images came up as an example for a few tendecies. If Pixoto does not regulate this cases we will end up with "tomato vs waterfall" duels in the Nature Up Close category. And we are talking here about just only one category, but the same story repeats in the rest of them. I think this passes reasonable bounds.
And yes I'm saying the same thing: " there's no rule against that...".

I can imagine that for many people this is like an opportunity or an invitation to cheat. You solve the regulation = you solve further problems. If you don't ... the unusual cases number will increase.

If this post is categorized as "ridiculous" and my attempt to warning is classified as "foolish", I prefer to end up looking like a fool. The garret is full with all kinds of opinions and words of adwise.

  • The "unusual cases" is the only thing that keeps Nature up Close vibrant and fresh. There is a far bigger problem with people photoshopping backgrounds and flowers until they look totally unnatural, that I find it bizarre that you pick waterdrops and paint splashes to complain about but not those...

Personally, I believe all photographers should strive to be different, and try different styles and combinations. The aim is to create pictures using imagination and technique, not to submit 100's of identical "documentary" shots. As far as I can tell, I am the only one who submits these kinds of images to date - yet you pick on my images and not the hundreds of people submitting virtually identical horribly over-photoshopped water lilies, so yes I think you probably are miffed that you lost a duel to one of mine.

  • If you take this discussion at personal level you'll miss the point here.
I'm not miffed that I lost a duel with one of your pictures. I only gave an example how far can go people's imagination and if Pixoto does not do something about this in a few months time the ledearboard will look like an oil painted flower gallery. The same happened with waterdrops and now everyone complains about it. Of course everyone is miffed when they see nice flowers crushed with (Photoshopped or not) waterdrops. I think your picture was just a perfect example for that.
I agree with you that unusual cases are the heart and soul of this category, but let's keep it in a regulated border. Or ... you can unleash the dogs, but you don't have to wonder if they'll bite you as well.
I'm aware that I have no chance when it comes to professional photography because I don't have the practice, the necessary gear and of course the necessary time for that. (amateur camera and only the basic lens kit; once a week few hours to take some shoots; not processing at all except a few retouch with the basic ViewNx software).
I repeat myself: I'm not complaining and I'm not pissed off. I just tryed to show an unhealty tendency - from my point of view.
But if you feel uncomfortable with this I can give other examples as well.
I toke some screenshoots from the voting session. I'm really curious what's you opinion about that:

The last one is the type of photo that should not be classified as Nature Up Close. You can have Still Life with flowers too ... again, is my point of view.

In the images above there are a couple that are in the wrong category. The water drop with the pink flower reflection should be in Abstract Water drops and the Fire image should be in Abstract Fire & Fireworks. The last image, I believe is infrared and it is still a flower so it is in the correct category. Images are separated by subject, not by discipline (aka black and white, infrared, large format, color film, digital etc)

  • Right! Let's take the picture #5 and take a closer look:
    1. the subject is a naked girl from back (left)
    2. I can put her in 2 categorys: Nude/Budoir or Body Parts
3 There is no other rule - and this is my point!

If you put this picture probably will not have any chance to win in the Nude/Budoir, but it will make some noise in the Body Part category ...

And what has in common the onion with that rock?

  • Interestingly enough Mihaly, you've pointed out some of the flaws that ALL of us agree on about over-photoshopped flower images.
Some are painted in photoshop.... some are just painted... but the one with paint was at least a real PHOTO even if the flower had paint on it. Some of the others have filters and various paint and art effects applied in photoshop that make them literally unrecognizable as a photo in the first place.

  • I think it does not matter at all if the paint is real or not. Nowadays Photoshop can do almost everything ... That's why I don't use it. I don't want to look better then I am.
